When Deer Tick came on the scene with War Elephant, I was totally in love with them. I heard elements of Paul Simon and CCR in a modern indie rock and roll band. Although their subsequent records have failed to generate that excitement for me, the new one is outstanding. John McCauley is great at crafting songs that stick with you.

Thought I would do a pair of songs this week. The first is from the band Clem Snide. I thought they had called it quits but they have a new EP out of Journey covers. Very slow, mellow acoustic versions of some of Journey's most popular songs. Interesting to hear the songs stripped down without all the 80's production.

The second track is from a supergroup of sorts. Tres Mts. is King's X frontman, Doug Pinnick, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam and Fastback's drummer Richard Stuverud. King's X has been putting out records consistently since the 80's. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska is an excellent rock album from 1989.

Song Of The Week - A Better Place

The title track from Glen Campbell's new record is getting a lot of press. Pretty cool that he's covering Paul Westerberg, among others. I believe the self penned opener is his best track in years, probably decades. Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease earlier this year. A Better Place is an incredibly poignant track that takes a look back over his career. These last couple albums have tried to capture the Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin era. For me, this is the only song that really does it. Rhinestone Cowboy was one of my first favorite songs, so I will always have a soft place in my heart for him. His troubles with alcohol have been in the news for years but he still recognizes the good life he's had. I just love these lines.

My Favorite Guitarists - Part III, Gary Moore

Gary Moore passed away earlier this year at the age of 58, way too young. He goes way back with Phil Lynott, before the days of Thin Lizzy. They were in a band called Skid Row in Dublin. He was in and out of Thin Lizzy (helped out when Phil was in trouble with guitarists) thru the years but wasn't really a defining part of their sound.

He started his solo career in the early 70's and has played with a variety of musicians. In the 90's he moved away from the hard rock style of playing and started playing the blues. He never really received the recognition he deserved in the states.

The Horrible Crowes are a side project from Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon. The lead single is by the far the most Gaslight Anthem type song and is not indicative of the rest of the record. The rest reminds me a lot of the Afghan Whigs. Less guitar more late-nite fueled sketches.

My Favorite Guitarists - Part II, Roy Buchanan

I first heard Roy Buchanan in the early 90's. I wanted to hear some blues, I went to the library and checked out the Alligator Records Anniversary collection. Was wanting to check out acts like Albert Collins, Lonnie Mack and Delbert McClinton. I was really taken with the Buchanan song Drowning On Dry Land. I wouldn't consider him a blues guitarist at all but he has some blues elements in his playing. So I found one of my favorite guitarists while trying to get acquainted with the blues.

He might be best known for his chickin' pickin' style. His sound is so identifiable. He also influenced my three other favorites and you can surely hear it in their playing. You'll have to check back and see who the other two are. Like Danny Gatton, he had his demons as well. He also committed suicide at about the same age (Gatton was 49 - Buchanan was 48). Although there have been questions surrounding his death. He was found hung in a jail cell.

My Favorite Guitarists - Part I, Danny Gatton

I don't think there was a singular guitarists that made me run out and get a guitar at the age of 16 but since then I've had many favorites. I've narrowed down my list to four. There are dozens more that I really like but these four, for me anyway, stand out above the rest.

I was 16 in 1986 and was as big a metal head as you could find. Not the only music I enjoyed but sure was the most prominent at the time. I was probably into The Red Rocker, for showmanship more than actual ability, Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, Brad Gillis & Jeff Watson of Night Ranger and countless others with spandex and hair to the sky. My favorite guitarists name was Amir Derakh of the underrated metal band Rough Cutt.

I remember the first time I was truly blown away by a guitarist in concert. It was 1989 and his name was Reb Beach. The band was Winger....no I was not high. I think they were opening for Cinderella and Bullet Boys. I knew them and had there cassette, not ashamed to admit that. Don't think I've listened to them since 1989 or so but none the less, Reb Beach blew me away. Winger's songs were not very good but Kip and Reb had the chops. Reb studied at The Berklee College of Music.

No, he's not on my list or even close but it was a defining moment for me. I started really digging into artists that released instrumental records. Records that weren't defined by typical song structure. Don't get me wrong, I love a good riff and a solo in the middle as much as the next guy but was intrigued by things that were different.

I'm not ranking my favorites in any order but over the next couple of weeks I'll highlight four guys that fans of guitar music should check out. Three of the four have passed away and the most famous of them is still alive.

Danny Gatton. I saw him when I was going to school in Maryland in the early 90's. Little did I know, he wouldn't be around much longer. I consider myself lucky to have seen such an incredible talent. I have to give credit to a guy named Roy that turned me onto him and got me to go to the show. It wasn't until a few years later that I started to devour his catalog of music.

He had a style that was all his own. A mix of Jazz, Country and Rockabilly. His nickname was The Humbler. A highlight of his show would be grabbing a beer bottle or even a mug, usually with beer still in it, and using it as a slide with beer flying all over the stage. Like many artists, he had his demons. They got the best of him in 1994 as he shot himself. He left behind some amazing work. Here are a few cuts.

Eels - Electro-Shock Blues

One hell of a depressing record. Eels frontman was dealing with his sister's suicide and his mother's battle with cancer. Depressing but absolutely beautiful.

Chris Mills - Every Night Fight For Your Life

I remember having such a hard time tracking this album down. Read several good reviews but nobody carried the record. After finally tracking it down, his music has never been far from my playlists.

Son Volt - Wide Swing Tremelo

A wonderful album but does not get its due because it followed up the quintessential altcountry record, Trace. Coming back to this was such a joy.

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road

A classic done by a classic artist. Much credit needs to be given to Gurf Morlix for that wonderful guitar sound. Produced by The Twangtrust & E Streeter Roy Bittan with guests ranging from Steve Earle to Emmylou Harris. Incredible musical support by Buddy Miller, Charlie Sexton and Greg Leisz

Classic Old 97's. Ken's guitar is unmistakable and Rhett & Murray are at their songwriting best.

Matthew Ryan - Mayday

His debut and my sentimental favorite. He has evolved into one of the best songwriters going these days but man do he start of with a killer set of songs.

One of my all-time favorite records. Too bad this band had to implode.

Charlie Sexton Sextet - Under The Wishing Tree

I remember seeing his video in the 80's, he was still in his teens when his debut was released. Then he released a great record with the Arc Angels. This is his best solo effort by far. Between touring with Dylan and producing, he doesn't leave much time for himself.

Son Volt - Trace

Not sure what else needs to be said about this record. Calling it seminal is an understatement.

Wilco - A.M.

Son Volt & Wilco debuts in the same year. I was unfamiliar with Uncle Tupelo until I got these records. Both of these are classic.

Heirlooms Of August is a wonderfully quiet indie folk record by Jerry Vessel of The Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. If you thought Mark Kozelek was the only talant in those two bands, you may need to rethink it. I have a feeling this is going to be my favorite fall record. The mood and pace is perfect for the change of season. I only wish that we had more of a fall here in North Texas. Instead we will just get an endless summer, then move right into winter.

One of my favorite underrated songwriters. Fans of Tom Petty should check him out. He had a song on the Dumb And Dumber soundtrack and this seems to be all he is know for. Too bad, he's released several great records.

Nanci Griffith - Flyer

Discovered her earlier in the decade and after this album I went back and got her back catalog. A great songwriter.

Todd Snider - Songs For The Daily Planet

Debut album from another of my favorite songwriters. Blends humor and emotion into his songs like no other.

Tom T. Hall released an excellent children's album in 1974, I was 4. I heard Sneaky Snake on the radio and was bitten. I've loved his storytelling since. There was an amazing tribute album to him several years ago called Real: The Tom T. Hall Project. Johnny Cash, Whiskeytown, Kelly Willis, Mark Olson among others. Highly recommended. Now we have another tribute, this one is a tribute to that 1974 children's album called I Love (Tom T. Hall's Songs of Fox Hollow). Here's the track from my childhood performed by Buddy Miller with help from the resurfaced Duane Eddy on guitar.

The Arc Angels - S/T

Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section with Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II (2 excellent guitarists who also sing). Nice blues rock vibe with excellent songs. They broke up shortly after their debut release. Within the past few years they have played together live every once in awhile.

Alejandro Escovido - Gravity

Another Austin based musician and one of my favorites. Includes some of his best songs

Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience

This record got a lot of airplay when I was in college and many grew tired of them. They wrote wonderfully melancholy pop songs. They were never the same after their main songwriter committed suicide. There's an great altcountry song that closes out this album. Link below.

Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall

A seminal country/rock record. The harmonies of Louris and Olson are one of the best since CSN. An amazing album.

Neil Young - Harvest Moon

Kind of a follow up to his hugely successful Harvest album. Neil's output it so varied, this being mainly acoustic. His styles range From Hank to Hendrix.

Was listening to Mother Love Bone earlier this week. Would have loved to see where they would have gone if not for Andrew Wood's death. Pearl Jam was formed from the ashes of this band (Stone Gossard & Jeff Ament). I liked their rocking songs but I think they really shined on the ballads.

In 1974, and 18 year old Scottish guitar player joined Thin Lizzy. Nearly 40 years later, Brian Robertson has released his debut solo album. The sound is firmly planted in the 80's. Many of the songs have been around since then or before. A couple of Thin Lizzy covers are included. I tend not to like songs that try too hard to bring back that 80's sound but the title track is an exception. Can't say that I would recommend this record but it's nice to see him release something. Former Michael Schenker Group vocalist Leif Sundin's voice fits the song really well. It's amazing how a song comes along at just the right time and makes you feel something so strong right down in your gut. I won't hide the fact that I'm a big Sammy Hagar fan, but honestly, I don't listen to him much anymore. When I do, it always brings me back to my youth and it just feels... right. I came across this Montrose (Sammy's first band) bootleg last week. The quality is quite good. It's live in a studio from 1973, nearly 40 years ago.

I've always liked this song, "Make It Last", but I think this version is better than the original. The original can be found on the excellent Montrose debut album with Bad Motor Scooter, Rock The Nation and Rock Candy. It's a simple Ronnie Montrose guitar riff but here it's void of the studio sheen. Not that there was a whole lot of "production" on the record, but here, it sounds like he just plugged in and let go. Plus, there is a scorching solo. When I heard this version for the first time, I actually listened to the lyrics and they were quite poignant.

I've stayed away from the North Mississippi Allstars because the words Jam Band scare me. Even though the father of two of the band members is Jim Dickinson. This song is excellent. Love how they gave Jim the producer credit even though he had passed away before the record was recorded.

Gary Moore passed away today at the age of 58. Definitely falls in the top 5 of my favorite guitarists list.

On again off again guitarist for Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. Released several really good solo rock albums before he started focusing on the blues. His blues records were amazing as well. I think he had several more really good albums left. Will be sorely missed.

The best R.E.M. song in years except it is not by R.E.M. The whole record has hints of early R.E.M. especially this track. I've been really taken aback by this record, it's that good. Usually don't get this solid of a release in January. I think it is safe to say that this will be in the running for my top 10. Those of you that might have been turned off by the idiosyncrasies of The Decemberists in the past, give this a listen. Probably their most accessible record to date. I've only liked a few tracks from each of their previous records but this one solid.

Unfortunately, Justin seems to be following in his father's footsteps with addiction. Sobriety doesn't seem to be doing the elder Earle any favors. I can definitely hear Steve in his vocals and phrasing.

Two of my favorite musicians who were also in one of my favorite bands, The Faces. Ronnie Lane being an excellent songwriter and musician put out some great material post Faces. Sadly, he is no longer with us. Ron Wood put out some excellent solo records as well but his work in his "other band" always gets over shadowed by Keef. Here they are together on a soundtrack album. Which has some excellent instrumentals. Two other Faces show up on the record as well, Kenny Jones & Ian McLagan. Produced by Glyn Johns, one of rocks best producers.

I love Tom Waits first two records, especially The Heart Of Saturday Night. His experimental stuff not so much. One of my favorite's of his comes from 1985's Rain Dogs. Some great guitar work by Marc Ribot. Rod Stewart had a hit with it. I know many can't get past Wait's gruff voice but I think it just makes the song better.

Alejandro Escovedo is comfortable rocking out with the best of them and he can simply amaze with an orchestra. Like Sir Doug, he was born in San Antonio and spent time in San Francisco. There he formed the punk band, The Nuns. He moved back to Austin and formed Rank And File then The True Believers. Finally, he went solo and really came into his own. No Depression awarded him artist of the decade in the 90's. Earlier this decade he was seriously ill from Hepatitis C. A tribute record came out in 2004 called Por Vida with Steve Earle, Cowboy Junkies, The Jayhawks, Ian Hunter, Son Volt and many others. He's doing fine now and consistently releasing excellent material.

Before Justin Vernon formed Bon Iver, he was in a band called DeYarmond Edison. This track is from their self-titled 2004 release. Nice pedal steel and the chorus is a little addictive.

The Weakerthans have teamed with Canadian singer-songwriter Jim Bryson for their latest record, The Falcon Lake Incident. The record is solid, although Reconstruction Site is still my favorite album of theirs. Don't know much about Jim Bryson (other than he plays with Kathleen Edwards) but the Weakerthans' songs often read like short stories. The lead singer was in a punk band but he left to start a publishing company and eventually form this band.

Many great musicians hail from Texas, but I still believe there are only three names that really matter. Willie, Alejandro & Sahm. Willie, it's a given that everyone knows his music. Maybe not so much about the other two. That's a crime. So, I'm gonna do a primer on Doug Sahm and Alejandro Escovedo. I'll dig deep in the Willie vault for my last post. We'll start with San Antonio born, Sir Doug. Rock, country, blues, tex-mex, americana...he played it and played it well. Name an instrument, he could play it better than most. At the age of 11 he played with Hank Williams (this was Hank Williams' last show).

He had a hit single in 1965, She's About A Mover, with the Sir Douglas Quintet. In 1973 Dylan and Dr John played on his Atlantic debut album. He's played with Webb Pierce, Willie, The Grateful Dead, Flaco Jimenez, Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers, Uncle Tupelo and countless others. he died at the age of 58 of a heart attack.

Just last week a plaque was unveiled on Doug Sahm Hill in Austin to honor this amazing musician.

Alejandro Escovedo At The Prophet Bar - Nov 5, 2010

Alejandro Escovedo and The Sensitive Boys rocked the Prophet Bar last night and I do mean Rocked. My second time seeing him but this was on the opposite end of the Alejandro spectrum. I saw him about 5 years ago as the Alejandro Escovedo Quintet at a very intimate setting (another amazing show). Last night he brought all the fury and passion that I can only imagine he brought to the Nuns in the late 70's. The band is incredible!! David Pulkingham played the most blistering guitar I've seen/heard in ages. His playing ranks up there as some of the best I've ever witnessed and I've seen my share of talented guitarists. What amazed me the most was that even though he didn't play some of my favorite songs, I have a hard time imagining a better show. A few of the songs that I'm not very fond of the studio versions were simply incredible live.

Highlights for me were the Bowie/Mott The Hoople cover of All The Young Dudes, Down In The Bowery, Always A Friend (show closer), Rosalie and the instrumental dedicated to Stephen Bruton, Fort Worth Blue.

I have some issues with the venue (used to be the Gypsy Tea Room). There was an annoying party in the adjoining hall (which must not have had it's own exit) and the usual inconsiderate chatters. Thankfully, the band seemed to be enjoying themselves and the crowd was definitely into it.

Champaign, the central Illinois college town as purgatory? Not so sure, but it happens to be the catchiest song of the new Old 97's record The Grand Theatre Vol 1. After a four night residency at the storied Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas at the end of '09 where they played there entire catalogue, they went back to rehearse there for this new record. Recorded in Austin. Vol 2. is supposed to be released early next year.

This is a song from an Austin Band (with Dallas ties) called Milton Mapes. I've seen them a couple times and they have some pretty good songs but don't think they've had much exposure. It's from their 2003 Westernaire album. A highly recommended album. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Robert Plant is covering this song on his new record. Plant has put together a new band called Band of Joy featuring Buddy Miller, Kathy Griffin and a host of Nashville sidemen. I still like the original better but it's nice to see a good band get some due. Would love to hear how this song got to them...my guess would be Buddy Miller.

It's amazing how many songs there are about L.A and California. Three of my favorite songs happen to be about this city. One song is from my childhood and the other two came out shortly after I spent a year in the crazy city. I love LA, just like Randy Newman but I was just as happy to get the heck out of dodge. These songs, at least to me, capture Tinseltown and my time there perfectly.

Jerry Jeff Walker - L.A. Freeway (from his self titled 1972 release). It was written by Guy Clark and his version is just as good but it was JJW's that I knew first. "Adios to all this concrete". I love the line about Skinny Dennis ("the only thing I will miss"). Didn't know that it was a real guy until I started getting into Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Skinny Dennis Sanchez was a Los Angeles bass player (w/ Clark for awhile). He died at the age of 28. The excellent film, Heartworn Highways, is dedicated to him.

UFO were (still around in some form) a great English rock band. They put out some excellent albums in the 70's and 80's. Formed as a space rock band in the early 70's. They put out a couple records with limited success, then Michael Schenker (then of the Scorpions) joined and the dynamic changed. The classic line-up was formed (Phil Mogg, Pete Way, Michael Schenker & Andy Parker). From 1974 - 1979 they put out six great records. 1977's Lights Out being my favorite. Zakk Wylde. Definitely not the first person I think of, when I think of patriotic music. His rendition of America The Beautiful is stunning. Wylde, ex Ozzy Osbourne guitarist has been fronting his own band , Black Label Society, for years. Heavy Metal meets Southern Rock. But this is nice acoustic instrumental really shows his chops. They've done some interesting covers over the years, Neil Young, Blind Faith, Black Sabbath to name a few. They do a nice version of Procol Harem's Whiter Shade of Pale with piano.
